About the Speaker
Professor Gavin Williams PhD FACP
Gavin Williams has worked in neurological rehabilitation for over 25 years. He is the inaugural Associate Professor of Physiotherapy Rehabilitation, a joint position appointed between Epworth Healthcare and The University of Melbourne. In this role, Gavin works clinically in the neurological rehabilitation unit at 0.5EFT and in a research role at 0.5EFT. Since he began working at the Epworth Hospital 23 years ago, he has developed a program to teach advanced gait and running skills to people with neurological injuries.
This program led to his doctoral studies titled ‘The development of a high-level mobility assessment tool (HiMAT) for people with traumatic brain injury'. Since that time he has been a Post-doctoral Research Fellow focusing on the assessment, classification and treatment of mobility limitations following traumatic brain injury.
Gavin was awarded Fellowship to the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2011. He has over 80 peer-reviewed journal publications and over 120 international and national conference presentations. He was also involved in the development of a new classification system for Paralympic athletics which was implemented at the London Paralympics. Gavin recently completed a NHMRC TRIP fellowship at the University of Melbourne.
Course Information
Gait disorders are common in the most prevalent neurological conditions across the lifespan; cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury , multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and stroke.
These neurological conditions have very good long-term survival, though they can lead to reduced mobility (i.e. walking) and low participation (i.e. lesser engagement in work, leisure, social or sporting activities).
For example, 75-90% of people with moderate-severe TBI do not return to their pre-morbid activities, and of those living with stroke, many have a resulting disability, with 75% of people not walking fast enough to resume their pre-morbid activities.
